Alpha Lambda Delta

Alpha Lambda Delta’s mission is to “encourage superior academic achievement… to promote intelligent living and a continued high standard of learning, and to assist students in recognizing and developing meaningful goals for their unique roles in society.”

http://www.nationalald.org/

The goal of the national academic societies of Alpha Lambda Delta (ALD) is to promote and recognize high scholastic achievement for first-year students.

Alpha Lambda Delta was founded as a national honor society for freshmen women at the University of Illinois in 1924.  The University of Maryland Adele H. Stamp Chapter was founded in February 1932 and celebrated its 80th year in 2012.  In 1975, the Alpha Lambda Delta National Council voted to admit men into the organization.  Alpha Lambda Delta  now has over 280 chapters nationwide and more than 800,000 members.

Alpha Lambda Delta operates with a central budget, shared activities, and a University of Maryland Foundation Endowed Scholarship account.  The chapters are governed by one Executive Board.

Other activities include donating school supplies to public elementary schools in Baltimore and donating canned goods for local food banks who feed those in need. Members donate money to a number of selected local philanthropies.

Academic Enrichment

There are at least two academic enrichment events held each semester for Alpha Lambda Delta (ALD) members. This past year events focused on study abroad, national scholarships, career advising and tutoring.

Leadership and Involvement

edited-60Alpha Lambda Delta (ALD) Honor Society offers several opportunities for members to become involved. All members are invited to apply for officer positions, event chairs or committee members. Elections are held in the spring semester. In these leadership roles, students make important decisions. They plan, create and execute all the events for the members of Alpha Lambda Delta (ALD) Honor Society. Innovation, commitment, and dedication are a must for those seeking leadership roles.

Communication

An electronic newsletter informs members of various activities. Members are emailed immediately about events in which they are encouraged to participate. In addition, the Chapter’s website is a means of communication between members.

Graduation Honor Cords

Members who have maintained a 3.5 cumulative grade point average and have earned at least three service activity points per semester are eligible to purchase Alpha Lambda Delta honor cords at the time of graduation.
